OWNER

Mitchell J. Smith is the owner and founder of Temple Gym and Fitness. He resides in Jacksonville, Florida with his two children Ashley and Brandon. Mitchell and his late wife, Phyllis Smith, were blessed with 27 years of marriage.

Mitchell was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is the youngest of six children born to Robert and Robbie Smith. Raised in Southside project homes, Mitchell graduated from Myers Park High School and attended two years of college before enlisting in the United States Navy where he achieved the highest enlisted rank of Master Chief Petty Officer and honorably retired after 30 years. Serving in the top levels of military defense, Mitchell has vast knowledge and training in personal security, weapons, combat skills and martial arts. He currently volunteers at First Coast Christian School as strength and conditioning coach as well as the assistant coach for the high school baseball and football teams.

Growing up in an underprivileged neighborhood, his father’s influence as a boxer both in the U.S. Army and professionally led to opportunities coaching youth in the “sweet science of boxing” at the Bethlehem Center. Mitchell spent countless hours at this venue, which provided security, instruction, self-discipline, respect, honor, boundaries and hard work. The Bethlehem Center was a safe haven from the hard streets of Charlotte that sparked a vision to provide recreation through fitness and a gateway to ministry.

Having a passion for God and wanting to give back to the community, a lifelong dream between Mitchell and Phyllis was to establish a facility that would offer a safe environment for youth to accomplish fullness of mind, body and spirit. It was Phyllis’s dream to name it Temple Gym & Fitness. It is Mitchell’s quest to honor God and his wife, and bring this dream to fruition.
